During the early years of her life, Joy Kirton Smith lived in the Worcestershire countryside. Her first art influence came from her two elder brothers and her father, who were in the painting and decorating business, always trying out new materials and styles.

Many years later her love of art began as she attended Halesowen College where she obtained an A level in fine art, then continuing to attend the college as a member of their workshop group.

Kirton-Smith is greatly inspired by the Italian Renaissance. She says she has gained great experience and reference from her travel to diverse places such as Venice and the Mardi Gras Carnival in New Orleans. Another great memory of hers is the time she lived in the Grand Cayman, the beautiful sunsets reflecting on the blue sea, memories which remain in her paintings still today. Wherever she travels she brings back a little something as reference.

Although working in all media, on different types of background from canvas to rice paper, most of her paintings share the common theme, form and movement of almost dancing characters.

Kirton-Smith admits to having a home studio of clutter and often spends part of her working day in search of reference material hidden amongst it. Facing south, this gives her the natural light she desires for her painting. Her other love is her garden, which she finds relaxing at the end of her working day to sit and enjoy the wildlife that visit
