It was at 29, after shopping for art and thinking ‘I could do that’, that he created his first piece. Although not the portrait work we now associate with Paul, it still had his trademark splats and thick texture.
In 2008 he had his first solo exhibition and the following year he left his job in software brand development and became a fulltime artist.
Inspiration for his works come from his lifelong passions, which include Star Wars, Lego, Sports and Formula One. His passion for the subject matter clearly shows through and has resulted in him being part of official Star Wars art shows, live painting at F1 race weekends, and being commissioned by British Olympic champions.
He’s recently had shows in London, LA and Dubai and was live painting at the Monaco GP (one of his party tricks!). Paul Oz’s artwork has also featured at the GP Ball, Singapore GP, Playboy Club London, Selfridges Oxford St, Harrods and the Goodwood Festival of Speed ITV4 show.
Celebrity collectors of Paul Oz’s explosive 3D portraits in oils include Sir Bradley Wiggins, Jenson Buton, Sir Alex Ferguson and Theo Paphitis. And he’s painted commissions for Red Bull, Pirelli Marussia F1, Instituto Ayrton Senna, The RPA and Team Sky among others.
In addition to creating his much in demand art, Paul is also patron to ‘Its In The Bag’ (Testicular Cancer Awareness) and regularly fundraises for Cancer Research UK, Rugby Players Association, Clic Sargent and GOSH.
“I’m perhaps not a textbook artist – my entire aim is for visual impact, to capture characters in a unique way that blows your sock off and to illicit a response something along the lines of ‘woooohhhhaaa!’. The beauty of creating portraits is that each one could mean absolutely everything or nothing at all to you …..but everyone has an idol, mentor, someone they’re a massive fan of or indeed love…..it’s an absolute honour to be asked to immortalise them all in paint.”
